Hello all,
I should know but am not sure of the fix for a singe phase problem I've encountered.
My daughters recently purchased clothes dryer would not work in her mobile home. I hit the start button and recieved a buzz but the dryer would not start.
I checked the breaker panel (mobile home specifice) and discovered that there was no ground coming into the enclosure. Only 2 hots and a neutral. The box has a neutral bus and a ground bus and her loads were installed correctly as best I could tell. However with no ground I suspect the 240V load must not have a good reference. I turned off the 30A breaker, removed the outlet cover and replugged in the dryer with the cover off. I had previously checked the voltages at the outlet and my meter read 246V accross the two hots.
I turned the breaker back on and carefully measured the voltage from each hot to neutral while she held in the start button. On the first hot - to - neutral I read 125V, on the second I read 36V. I turned the breaker off and connected a jumper from the neutral bus to the ground bus in the panel to obtain a common reference and tried the dryer again (this time with the outlet cover back in place). The dryer started but would not heat up. I know the dryer works as I tested it just prior to purchasing it. What is the trouble and how do I fix it.
Thanks, Monte
