When wiring smoke alarms in an existing home that didn't need them at the time of construction (1965), does the basement one need to be placed near the furnace or near the stairway? Or does it matter? I've always been putting them in the furnace area, and the inspector has always passed it. But I just read somewhere that they are placed near the stairway. Which is better?

Check with your local building inspector, or fire marshal. Normally we put them at the bottom of the stairs. More may be needed depending on the space.

As has been mentioned there isn't a specific location decided by a code. However, logic tells me that the bottom of the stairs is the better spot because that's where an updraft would take place in the event of a smoke condition. I don't like to place them near a furnace just to cut down on the possibility of unwanted alarms.

Combo smoke/CO

Combo smoke/CO

Bldg./Fire inspector in NJ, requires SD/CO, 120V/Batt BU located @ highest loc. in bsmnt., @ bottom of stairs
plus interconnected to existing FA system. Clients ask why:slaphead:

The highest point in the basement assuming no bedrooms and then it must be kept 3' from ducts, fans and cold air returns. Also keep it away from bathrooms and kitchens.

I also agree to check with local ahj as their may be some amendments.
