12v Splice Points

Do 12v splices need to be in a box (if above a suspended ceiling for instance)? Can these be tied together or butt spliced (if stranded)? I have seen them done both ways and cant seem to find a code reference that would direct me either way. Thanks.

I think it depends on what you are doing, and whether or not its class 1, 2 or 3 wiring. see 725, and chapter 8

What class power supply is supplying the 12 volt system?
