Hello,
I have some 12v wires used for data connections, cameras etc and they currently run above a drop ceiling using j hooks along the wall and then in the ceiling tiles there is a small notch where the wire comes down and then goes into a camera for instance. Is this best practice? Acceptable? Thank for any help!

Except for aesthetics (based on the eye of the beholder) there is nothing wrong with it and is a somewhat common installation. There are cable organizers and wire mold products that could dress it up.

With that said the forum rules do not allow us to assist in DIY projects.
