I'm glad I wasn't there. I'm also glad substations are designed with generous clearances and locked fences.

i was working in a generating station for dwp, and one night they had a 230kv fault in a primary transformer. it punched a hole 2' x 3' in a 3/4" thick transformer case, went to ground in the rocks, melting them, and voided 10k gallons of transformer oil into the rocks, 100 yards from the pacific ocean.

lot of overtime the following month.

Here is a good bird's eye:

Look like a sustained arc fault. Biggest question for me is why relaying didn't pick it up. It should have lasted for no more then half a second. 8 minutes is unheard of

Oh God! you have people all over the place saying UFOs and Russian hackers. Here is the latest theory gaining momentum:

Left a few comments on these channels and got vaped challenging the echo chamber  Not sure whats worse the media coverage or the people to be honest, but either way don't care. Its fun to watch.

OK, the general level of stupidity and paranoia the commentors exhibit pales next to the terrifying realization that most of these oxygen thieves can vote.

Found a vid as close as the public could get:

I hope this was shut down via SCADA, imagine being the guy having to go into the control hut open the breakers :eek:
Based on the duration of the arc and the lack of any changes, I am willing to guess that any breakers are right in the middle of all that mess and would do precious little good if someone tried to open them.
Am I correct that the "power plant" was actually a substation?
Any idea why the remote end of the transmission line(s) feeding it was not shut down sooner?

They might survive the heat, but if not the breakers behind them or further down.

You are correct. It is a substation, a 16 position 138kv ring bus to be exact. (see pic) Basically a junction box or a better analogy your home breaker panel. Generation and 138kv underground cables supping other substations connect to it.

No idea but I have a guess. Normally if all else fails like primary, secondary or breaker fail relaying you have remote zone 2 and remote zone 3 backup protection for that- usually step distance. Its possible, and this is just me making a wild guess, that after the East 13th st incident Coned increased the sensitivity of, or disabled remote backup protection all together. That way an uncleared fault will not remove transmission supplies from the entire substation. Had Astoria East cleared you would have blacked out some or all of Queens- so the fact the substation remained energized despite the arc kept the lights on which was in Con Ed's favor.

Maybe we need to institute an IQ test for qualifying to vote. Do I need to put a smiley here?

I'm pretty sure it was orchestrated by aliens (UFO type) to disguise other activity :D
You keep confusing me with factual information !
