140 Volt to ground

I was checking an electric panel today at a residence. The voltage was 140 volts to ground. Is this within the normal range?

10% up or down from 120 is normal, that be 132. Was that L1 to ground what was L2 to ground and what's L1 to L2 may have an open neutral developing

From what? One line? What about the other line? If it's 100v, you have a bad neutral.

same on both legs. I did not check leg to leg. Will return soon and verify.

L2-N

If.... both L-N voltages are over maybe 135v then a call to the PoCo is definitely in order.

The public utility commission may have a lower limit...in Illinois it is 127 line to neutral.

I’d try a second volt meter.

If there is more than one house off the same transformer, check and see if the neighbors have the same high voltage. If the neighborhood is close to a sub station, the poco may have it high to keep end users voltage up. Or could be a bad regulator.
