Can I use 15 amp receptacles on a 20 amp circuit in a commercial building? Its been a while since I have done commercial, been slinging romex for about a year now, and I have a call to go put some receptacles in a commercial building tomorrow.

Re: 15 amp receptacles

Yes it is a duplex. Are there contractors that you know of that only use 20 amp receptacles for commercial wiring? I Didnt know how well the 15 amp receptacles will hold up.

Re: 15 amp receptacles

You would only need a 20 amp device if someone were plugging in something that had a 20 amp attachment plug. A 15 amp duplex is considered 2 receptacles and would be adequate on a 20 amp circuit in a commercial environment.

Re: 15 amp receptacles

...anyone have an Article No. on that (I had a vauge recollection of it...but was thinking resid., not comm.)

Re: 15 amp receptacles

Would not the original specs. of the building have something to do with this ??

If the original plans called for 20 amp receptacles throughout the building on 20 amp circuits wouldn't you have follow suit ???

Who is to say you can now apply code minimum ??

Is that also for resid. ?
Not to open that can of worms again (# of recpt.s on ckt in resid. )...but this is where I am headed.

Re: 15 amp receptacles

drg,

I would agree that the spec should be followed but I think that the original post was asking if a 15 amp receptacle on a 20 amp circuit is code compliant, which it is as long as you use a 15 amp duplex receptacle.

Celtic,

Yes, this is for residential or commercial etc.
Well thank you...and here I was thinking I was going senile or something.

(Just stop before you even start on me :D )

Re: 15 amp receptacles

Code compliant in this case could mean nothing ...

The issue is serving a customer their requirements that meet or exceed code specifications and following code minimums can cost the electrician time and money.

Check and be safe before installing the wrong devices.
