I have a customer building a new house 1500' from the nearest primary pole. He wants a 200 amp underground service. Primary underground from the local utility will cost around $30,000. I have a couple options I've been tossing around, either step up the 120v/240v or run paralleled 350-350-350-4/0 which should give me a line loss of about 6 volts from my rough calculations.
 
They might save $5-10k, but if it goes bad, it’s on them to repair or replace. If the primary goes bad, it’s on the poco. So they are better off paying the poco to do it. At least from a maintenance perspective. Also any power loss from voltage drop is paid by the customer since it would be on the load side of the meter. (Also transformer losses if you go that route)

I see you are in NY. I assume this is not in NYSEG territory as they let electricians run primary? Not sure I Agree with your wire size and drop figure. I get 500 AL for 5% drop with 65 amps.

I have a 1900 run at my house, and I did a step up step down to 2400 volts. I used #10 2KV PV wire. Doing this as a professional, you wouldnt want to exceed the conductor voltage rating like I did, but you could just order 2000 volt transformers. Set it up as a MGN and you only need one conductor of the PV wire and the grounded conductor only needs to be 600V rated. You would also need to bump up to #8 size as that is the minimum allowed per code for MV. OR, probably just skip that "homebrew" scheme and just use 15KV concentric neutral primary, its only$2 per foot. Set up as an MGN, you just need one conductor. Dont be nervous about making up the loadbreak elbows, there is nothing to it. Use 25KVA pads, about $2000 - $2500 a piece. transformer pads are $500. Price that out vs secondary and big aluminum wire. No load losses for 2 25KVA will be about $180 per year, take that into account.
