How did the code come up with 1500 VA for small appliances and laundry? Why 1500 and not another number?

I'm not sure there is any specific reason.

1500 is as good as any other number, and it gives about 12 amps for each SA and laundry circuit.

All in all, these loads are normally pretty small when compared to the total load that normally includes HVAC, or compared to the minimum dwelling unit service size. So why worry too much about why its that exact number? Just add it in and move on.

1500VA = 12A at 125V,
14ga wire = 15A peak load, max continuous load = 80% = 12A

So why worry too much about why its that exact number? Just add it in and move on.

Because when adding load to an existing dwelling juggling real life and 220 can be a PITA.
