I needed another receptacle in the garage (where GFCI is required), so I elected to branch off an existing and underutilized single 15A receptacle dedicated to my kitchen range hood since all it powers is an LED light and small fan motor (was formerly used for an above range microwave that has since been relocated with dedicated power). Rather than have the GFCI receptacle tucked into the upper cabinet above the hood, I added it as the last receptacle in the now two outlet circuit. The GFCI receptacle is also 15A. The circuit is 20A on 12/2-B NM-B (Romex).

20A Circuit > Hood 15A Duplex Receptacle > Garage 15A GFCI receptacle (no other downstream receptacles)

I'm subject to 2017 NEC. I know the NEC allows 15A receptacles on a 20A circuit as long as there is more than one receptacle. I assumed the GFCI receptacle is treated no differently than any other receptacle with this exception. So that would make the above compliant, correct? Are there any issues with this approach?

This appears to be a DIY post which we are unable to assist with, esp as we don’t know what you are not asking and if the work is done per code
