I have never specified a 15A/3P breaker and have never really been asked about it. But recently I specified a 20A/3P for a 1HP exhaust fan and was told that it needs to be 15A. I understand where the inspector is coming from. FLA of 1HP motor at 208V is 4.6A. 4.6A x 2.5 = 11.5A. Next higher OCPD is 15A. But I am curious if this logic is right. Because I always see small motors on 20A circuits and it doesn't seem to be a problem.
