16 AWG Cable Vs Motor Wiring

We have to wire a machine who have many small motor (2HP and less). The tray cables for motors are going to run in a 4x4 cable duct that we will install aroud the machine. We want to know if we can use 16 AWG cable or is 14AWG is the minimum required for motors.

At table 310.5 14AWG is the minimum size but Belden in is catalog have 16AWG tray cable for motor application rated 600V....

Also when we go out of the duct to the motor, how long we can go out of the duct without mechanical protection...

Thanks

Re: 16 AWG Cable Vs Motor Wiring

Section 430.22(F) permits the use of conductors smaller than 14 AWG but not smaller than 18 AWG between a stationary motor rated 1 hp or less and the separate terminal enclosure permitted in 430.145(B).

Protection of cables is completely dependent on each and every installation and the NEC does not specify a length in which protection will be needed.

I do not know the industry you are involved in, but remember that NFPA 79 as per NEC art 670 may be able to be utilized for additional insight/guidelines - & maybe not.
