Ok, here is the situation. There is an existing 1600A busway riser up many floors. The drawings said that a tap need to be made on one of the floors. It says that it can be made either with a plug duct switch or a disconnect switch. My switchgear guy said he will provide a custom box with lugs etc. to be mounted to the bust duct and we can go from there to a disconnect switch. I guess this can be done. A guy in my office said for this to be done a section of the bus needs to be removed and then the box installed. He said just for that work we should allow 50 hours. So about 3 guys 2 days plus a little more or however you want to break it up. This work is just for the box installation and not piping to the disco.

Is this correct?

Horsegoer,

Is this a true feeder type busway? Meaning no provisions for installing busplugs?

Disregard the thing your coworker said, that is obsurd. Think about it, you have a busduct riser, then you are going to take out a section, put the tap box in and reinsert the original section?

You will have to raise the busduct on all the floors to get the original section back in, this could be many floors. Too much work in my opinion.

If its a feeder type and the manufacture is readily available, I would insert a plug-in type section and get a fusible plug.

If its obsolete, maybe you're switchgear guy can make up a section with provisions for plugs.

Don't forget the shut down, which probably occur on premium time.
