If your jurisdiction is still using the 1996 NEC and you perform wiring in accordance with the 2002 NEC are you still covered?

You would not be covered if the provisions of the 1996 edition that applied to your installation were stricter. One example of this is the use of type NM cable in some buildings over three stories in height. The 2002 edition permits this under some circumstances the 1996 edition specifically forbids it.

Re: 1996 NEC vs. 2002 NEC

Being from California where the adopted code is usually 6 years behind the current one I have found that most jurisdictions will not deviate whether the rule in question is stricter or more lenient. Using whatever version of the code suits a person best can make things real convoluted. After all if the ?96 is the adopted code, then it is a legal document. The ?99 and ?02 are after all just proposed changes at this point.
