1st- my thread should have read UPB, not USB.
I've got a church that had an addition put on 10+ years back, and we have a light switching issue. The addition, mostly office spaces & classroom) is attached to the side. This addition has grade level access with a basement portion below. At the front of the church, at a side isle there's a door that joins to the new addition. Here's the problem, there were never any 3-ways put in between the church lights over to this doorway in the addition. SO, when the the lights are off in the church, and they are leaving the new addition to go into the church, there is no switch to get the isle lights on. (which is what they want.)
Okay, IMO big oversight on the guys who wired it.
They don't want me to use a RF remote switch (distance of 100 ft+) not really line of sight, but close.
Instead of wiring the 3-ways across the basement, which probably could be done, but would very labor intensive (which is maybe why they didn't do it at first), they want me to look into this UPB style switch.
They are looking at a US-1140W switch from an online company http://www.simply-automated.com . Part of a UPB system that I not that familiar with at all. He want me to tap into a nearby outlet to feed a switch that would send pulses across the phases to be picked up by a remote switch. Never put in anything like that before, so any tips on this kind of install would be appreciated.

what do you guys think?

Haven't used any line-carrier systems yet, but have suggested them a few times where the cabling was too difficult. Skimmed the site, looks reasonable at first glance.

It is just like the system Radio Shack has been selling for years. One module transmits

over the 120v recpt. power lines and the other module receives the signal the same way.

They are easy to install. The quality of the equipment ???

Well, close. X-10 was the original DIY home-automation protocol, but there have been many mutations over the years. UPB has a good reputation for reliable operation, from what I've read.

The basics are that you replace existing switches with wall-mounted receivers, and choose the best transmitter type for your desired location of operation, even keypads and key fobs. (RF is not a bad word.)

Contact Home Automation Net , tell them your needs, and ask for suggestions. Most simple systems are so easy to install and set up, you'll say "It can't be that easy!" but it is.
