hello, can someone remember the first year the nec addressed an in sight disconnecting means for an a/c condensing unit. a friend is having a time with a "home" inspector on a older house. while i certainly agree with validity of the 440.11, this "home" inspector is trying to ram his all encompassing knowledge down an elderly lady's throat and pre 1982 homestead. thanks, cocomm

The oldest code that I have access to right now is the 1978 NEC and 440-14 requires a disconnecting means located within sight of the A/C equipment.

thanks, that takes care of the 1982 house

I looked into 440 in my old trusty 1965 NEC book,
and found these references.

Under Section "H", Disconnecting Means, for motor circuits and controllers, I read
430-102. In Sight from Controller Location. A disconnecting means shall be located in sight from the controller location, except as recognized in Section 422-26. And 430-86 takes up on locking such disconnecting means.

But nothing specifically for A/C condensers as we know them today.

I am thinking, remembering back to when I was finishing apprentice,
that in sight disconnecting means for an a/c condensing unit was just a given.
It was all part of an installation.
There were few house-size condensers back then.
It was part of Article 430 then.
