Aluminum cable is just about the only type of cable we use underground. I am curious, why are you asking since you are not an electrical professional (my assumption)?
Jim, if he is a Biochemist, he may be interested in how we use aluminum in contact with the earth without detrimental effects. If he is asking how to install it or what size to use, I'll pull the plug.
Charlie ,i respect that to be your call. The part that gets me thinking DIY is asking about 2/0 and with ground.Had he asked if aluminum can be barried i might think on your lines. This sounds to me like he has some 2/0 and wants to use it.I might be wrong and i been wrong before.
Planer is restoring a commercial shop. In trying to translate between inspectors and electrical contractors, he has gotten some information that does not track. Work is done by electrical professionals, but he is trying to understand and be involved in the thinking. He has been told that aluminum wire is never allowed underground and that connections in a junction box may never be made between copper and aluminum conductors.
I have opened up this thread for his information about what may be done but not how it is to be done.
Planer, you looked like a DIY and we do not permit that here. I apologize for shutting you down.
