2 circuits to a quadraplex

Is it okay to run (2) 120V circuits from the same panel to a quadraplex receptacle? Contractor says there wasn't enough space to put 2 duplexes side by side.

In what size box?
It's done with a double gang box all the time. Also a 4 inch square with a double gang raised plate will work fine.
If he has a single gang box already in the wall then it won't fit but that can be fixed with a double gang wiremold box mounted over the single gang box.

How can there not be enough room for two duplexes in a double gang box?
Is the quad designed to be fed with two circuits?
