Hello,
I have two 50hp motors both with Siemens "manual starter protectors" & contactors in one control panel. Do I need to provide additional individual short circuit protection for each motor or can I use 1 branch circuit protector for both of them?

Thanks in advance

chiplein,

You only have to provide branch circuit protection. The devices are listed for combination short circuit/overcurrent protection.

chiplein is correct. However I would not use manual starters for motors this size. Or should I say I would not want to be the one to push the start button. The starting current will be approximately 8 to 10 times higher than running current. If my memory serves me correctly you need to consider 250% of nameplate amp rating. I would install one soft start for each motor. They are very inexpensive and will minimize the starting issue and prevent equipment damage associated with across line starting. Most soft starts have built in overload and bypass circuitry. Check www.wegelectric.com for the soft starts. Series SSW-05 0-60 hp.
