with a 110 volt gfi recep you could take a wire and go from neutral to ground or use your gfi testing device. on a 240 gfi breaker how can you test it other than just pushing the button?
thanks

Phase to ground ? The button though, is an aprooved method.

wouldn't phase to ground trip almost any breaker, gfi or not? maybe except zinsco or fpe? i have seen 110 volt outlets hooked up with reverse polarity, hooked to a gfi breaker and it still worked. ok just wondering if any guru's had any home built test. thanks again

A wiggie will trip most GFCI's by going from phase to ground. However the test button on the GFCI is the approved method as Buck Parrish mentioned.

Many voltage testers will trip the GFCI if you test from phase to ground. A high quality DMM usually won't. My Fluke 87 does not trip a GFCI.
