Some Hot tubs require a 4 wire 50 amp connection.
Others require only a 3 wire 50 amp connection. (2 hots & 1 Grnd) Will a 2 pole 50 amp GFCI breaker protect a Hot tub with a 3 wire system? Thanks

Perhaps. This just isn't the kind of question I would expect from an electrical contractor, at least in my neck of the woods. I realize that doesn't apply to the rest of the country.

When someone isn't specific about their involvement in the electrical industry, we have to be careful about what kind of advice we give. Remember the forum rules:

* This NEC? Forum is for those in the electrical and related industries.
Questions of a "How-To" nature by persons not involved in the electrical industry will be removed without notice.

There is more then one answer to this ?
Different brand of breakers have requirements.
example SD has a 60 amp that will work on a 3 wire or a 4 wire circuit. Some brands you must match your circuit.Check product cat.

Huh?

All GFCI circuit breakers are the same. There is no "matching" involved. If you don't have a neutral, you simply don't connect it.

be4jc,

Why did you remove your original comment? It was already quoted twice after you posted it!

Re: 2-pole gfci protection for Hot tubs

As far as I know, all 2-pole GFCI breakers have a neutral wire that must be attached to the panel's neutral bus, whether or not the load circuit has a neutral conductor.

Re: 2-pole gfci protection for Hot tubs

Protecting our industry is very important, I agree. But we do have to remember how broad this industry is. There are some who have never seen a GFCI in their travels, therefore may not know how it functions. Lets give them a break, we surely would rather see them excel, as oppose to floundering - that does not help the industry.
Educate, educate, educate!!! If some from outside the industry learn, it is better than letting them install improperly anyway, especially life safety devices.

BTW - I still think that in the bio, there should be more info given, with that info on the bottom of every post, such as what they do, where they live/work - it would help some with some of the local requirements.
