Is it okay to have 2 pronged outlets ( this is an old house) all throughout a house or are you required (NEC) to have a certain number of 3 prong (grounded) in certain rooms of a house.

it is OK to have 2 prong receptacles. But if you replace them then you need to follow NEC.

In a nutshell:
2 prong with 2 prong
2 prong with three prong with GFCI protection
2 prong with three prong with an EGC in the box and connected to the grounding system

Outlets with 2 or 3 prongs are both dangerous. :p

Nec has no required # of recepticals to be added to a two wire system.

The State of Wv adopted the 2008 NEC along with the 2009 International Property Maintenance Code (IPMC). Part of the IPMC requires "Every laundry ares shall contain at least on grouned type receptacle or a receptacle with a ground fault circuit interrupter" The other receptacles can be of the non grounded type.

Four prong receptacles are the safest.

Reference to the "grounded type" receptacle for laundry areas was even in the 1947 NEC.

I would argue you are required to have as many grounded [equipment grounded] receptacles in the house as is required to comply with 250.114. [This is 'grounded' as opposed to a GFCI protected 3-prong ungrounded receptacle].
