2" SEU connector used underneath the electric meter

Hi all,

I recently had an electric inspector fail my Generac generator installation because I used a 2" SEU and a 2" SER connectors underneath a 200 amp 3R meter box and underneath a Generac 3R automatic transfer switch. Both entries to the enclosures were on the bottom side (not the top or sides). He claims that they are rated for indoor use only and NOT outside? I have never been called out on this in 32 years. Can they not be used in those locations? If they can be used there, where do I get the documentation to say that? Where does it say that they can't be used for that?

Thanks,
Creekman

They can be used on the underside of the meter because they are below the level of live parts. Someone will post the code section.

Welcome to the forum.

The clamps provide cable protection, cable retention, and closing off of the openings.

They do not need to provide water tightness when used below energized components.

I totally agree, but he is not going to accept anything else but documentation stating so in the NEC, or manufacture's literature, or a UL listing. I haven't found anything to say in can or can't be used when entering underneath the enclosure.

This is a difficult one to prove to the AHJ because they will need to understand that the NEC is a permissive code...that is if it doesn't say you can't, then you can. Take a look at end of 312.2 for the requirement that applies.
...For enclosures in wet locations, raceways or cables entering above the level of uninsulated live parts shall use fittings listed for wet locations.
That is the only permission that I know of that says you can use fittings not rated for wet locations below the live parts.

There is no documentation that says you can use it but the code section that Don provided is the correct one for this application. Since it is below the live parts it is not required to be listed for wet locations. This is not a complicated code requirement.

The burden is on the inspector to indicate the code article he says your install does not comply with.

Everyone has a supervisor for a reason. Don't be afraid to challenge him and climb the food chain.

If you're looking for product information, look for outdoor use rather than bottom of the enclosure.

Probably need to check UL product list and determine if identified as dry locations only. Many NM and MC fittings identified in this manner.

That is what I was thinking. Seen NM and MC fittings rejected before as well as set screw EMT fittings even though they were on the underside of an encolsure.

I don't really hardly use any SE cable, but seen plenty of older cables that had a water tight type of fitting used when entering the top of an enclosure, I presume they still make similar fittings.
