What is the biggest hole i can a 2x4 stud for wire ? (2017 nec) ?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

If the stud is actually 3 5/8" as it says in the title then the largest hole without anything additional as Larry mentioned would be 1 1/8".

1.25+1.25=2.5
3.625-2.5=1.125 or 1 1/8".

For structural concerns in wood frame construction, no larger than 1 3/8", for 2x4 studs, no more than 1 3/4" for double top plates.

Electrical clearances to avoid nail plates are as stated above by others.

We produced this guide for trades to know how much they can cut out of wood and leave it still structural.

Most importantly - you cannot drill 2x4 rafters AT ALL. Even a little hole to run Romex through. Not and meet code for structure.

All notching and boring of sawn lumber is the same between residential and commercial structural codes.

On the other hand, that is also the framer and or supers fault, because all drain locations should be boxed out. Even if it retrofit, box it out. 👍
The truth is, it was all on the framer this time. The plumber knew better, so he called the framer when he found the joist in his way, and the framer told him to just cut the joist out like that and the framer would fix it later. It was just too good a picture to spoil with that info up front ;)
