200 amp main breaker---100 amp service conductors

The question came up at break time. Can you feed a residential panel that has a 200 amp main breaker with 100 amp wire (#2's) coming from the outside meter? I say no, but can't find anything in the code to back it up.

Art 240 is your reference as well as 230.90. If you have no overcurrent protection ahead of your #2s the 240.4 would prohibit the install& 230.90 would require OCP
If your #2s have properly sized overcurrent protection ahead of them (at the meter) then the interior panel breaker could be any size. It's just a disconnect.

Keep in mind things change when there are multiple service disconnects.
