200 amp panel...

Is there anything that prohibits (2) 100 amp breakers in a 200 amp main breaker panel in a residential setting? Was a question that came up in my shop and another guy said that you weren't allowed by code to do that. Is he correct?

You can use 3 100 amp breakers in a 200 amp panel as long as the total connected load is under 200 amp.

I agree, you could fill a 200 amp 40 circuit panel with all 200 amp breakers as long as the calculated / connected load is under 160 continuous or 200 non-continuous.

I was thinking along those lines as well but wasn't sure if there was something I didn't know. Is there a specific article that spells that out that it's ok?

Better than that.....there is no Article that says you can't.

Think about a standard single phase 40 circuit 200 amp panel, If I load it with all single pole 15 amp breakers that totals a possible 300 amps per leg on that 200 amp breaker.

It's allowed because the calculated or connected load is what matters.

One last note, some panels have restrictions on how large a breaker can be put in.

With the plug in panels I used to deal with we could install a 2 pole 100 using just 2 spaces, to move above that to a 125, 150 200 etc required using 4 spaces (2 on each side of the panel).
