Someone remind me where in the code limits the number of branch circuit breakers that can be put into a 200 amp panel, or any other sized service panel for that matter. I know 42 is the answer, but for the life of me my tired old brain cannot remember.

Maybe because I am hearing from an associate of using a 60 position 200 amp panel. Hence the point of my question and only have a 2005 book. So before I rebute him I do not want to get caught out of date. Those things happen when you get old

408.35, in the 2005 edition. Removed in the 2008 edition. Also, if it was not a "Lighting and Appliance Panelboard," meaning that less than 10% of its breakers were 30 amp or lower with a connection to the neutral, then the 42 circuit limit did not apply. Even in 2005, you could have 20 three phase motor circuit feeder breakers in a single panel, for a total of 60 breaker positions.

It is legal, 408.34 and 408.35 are gone in the 2008. If you are 2005 then they apply.

2008

408.30 General. All panelboards shall have a rating not
less than the minimum feeder capacity required for the load
calculated in accordance with Parts II, III, IV, or V of Article
220 as applicable.

Thank you guys. 2008 cycle is what I was missing. Time to get a new book, 2011 cycle. This ole dog needs to learn some new tricks.

The only restriction now is "listing and labeling"
