This is my first time on here and figured I'd give it a shot to see if I could gain some general knowlede for a job Im doing.
I'm swapping out an old out of date 200 Amp panel(knob and tube) with a new one for proper grounding purposes.......I want to reuse all the breakers for cost reasons cuz as we all know breakers arent cheap especially when looking to save a little coin:smile:
The old panel is a 200 Amp Cuttler Hammer with bolt on style brakers........My question is where is the most convienient and affordable places to look for a replacement panel that would suit these bolt on breakers and also have surge protection at the main......Im not sure if I need to buy a 200 Amp Surge Main seperately or if it will come with the guts of the new panle board itself when i but it?......
I'd appreciate any feed back........
Also if anyone knows a little bit more about surge protection, is it adequate to surge protect at the main for computer equipment, tv's and printing machines with circuit board controls?

Thanks everyone!

Welcome,

We run SqD QO and I-line panelboards w/ integrated TVSS's. IIRC it's not cheap, but they'll sell them to you. I imagine CH offers similar products?

If you are changing for grounding reasons only, why don't you just ad and grounding terminal bar to the existing panel? And the install an external surge suppressor? IMO, it will much cheaper, and easier.

Thanks Doug/Sparky....The information u sent is very helpful....I've opted to change this panel not only for grounding reasons ......But also i need a panel with more than the 40 poles on it....Also because its onld Neutral Bus connection is in horrible shape and im not to keen on tying all my new cct neatrals on that strip. The Ground bar is a great idea,,,As it was my origional thought as well.....Would have been much easier......
However now Im in a position where i can just slap something together or i can go all out and fix these guys up with a proper system so they wont ever have to worry about any expasion or if its done properly in the future.......

I hope to keep in touch...I will let u know how things go....As long as I can figure out how to add u on my friends list...lol

I am not sure they make one with more then 42 spaces that will fit your breakers, yet. I could be wrong.
Also I was thinking if the neutral bar is corroaded. May be the inside of some of these breakers might be a little corroaded, too. Or rusty.

BUT do not have your install like this, have the TVSS mounted horizontalli with leads straight into a CB, Bundle the leads, minimize tight bends and long runs of conductor.

This also violates most manufacturers warranty by installing anything other than their equipment in the panel. I know I'll ketch hell for saying that but it is what it is. I was told this by a SQ D field rep.

Rule #1 when talking to field reps: Believe nothing they say unless you see it in writing.

They can mount in 1/2" ko's Mount them outside the panel.

Cavie, What you say may be fact...but what Mark says is defnitely fact.
Not only do some of them speak with limited knowledge, often they "forget" what was told.

Let's assume that these take a hit and are distroyed. Who's gonna know and when?

This can be a problem with any TVSS. Even those with lights, it requires someone observe the lights and realize what it is they're telling him or her. I don't know of any small TVSS's that alarm out.

You are doing a great disservice to your customer reusing the old breakers add a couple of hundred dollars to you bid and buy new. You have no idea where those breakers have been and if the neutral buss is damaged I amsure the same environment hasnt helped those old breakers. Would you want your family sleeping in a house with those old breakers??
