I'm finally getting a new pc (Dude I'm getting a dell!) And I want to get the 2005 NEC on CD. I remember people complaining about some kind of problems with the CDs and I was wondering if anyone knows if these "Problems" have been resolved before I buy one!
(I've never had a CD Rom version)
I think the "search" feature sounds great. Does it work well for you guys? Is it worth the $95.00?!?

Any opinions, pro or con, would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Dave

Re: 2005 NEC cd rom?

I have 2002 NEC Handbook on CD...well worth the price in saved time alone.

Re: 2005 NEC cd rom?

Dave,

I just installed the new Handbook CD. It comes with an activation sequence, not unlike MS XP components. I'd call the customer service at the NFPA and ask if the current NEC CD security has been upgraded to match that of the Handbook.

Al,
I heard this was being adressed..They did fix it were you can build a driver, install, and not have to dock the 2005 NEC CD to computer every time to use? I rarely even use mine anymore..

I do like the Handbook CD method, already installed, just click..

Re: 2005 NEC cd rom?

I will find out how well it works, I just ordered six copies of the handbook on CD-ROM. You can load it on the hard drive on your work PC and your home PC or your desktop and laptop. If you load it on two different person's PCs then you are cheating. :D

Re: 2005 NEC cd rom?

I have both CDs and they are priceless. I use one as much as the other and believe you me I use them. There is much to be learned in the Handbook although some wouldn?t agree. I use the illustrations in the class room and the commentary is useful as well.
The Handbook that I have can only be downloaded twice.
You can?t go wrong.

Al, I'm not sure what that means! Is there a problem when trying to install both cds?
If I like the NEC cd I most likely will also get the handbook on cd.
You're saying if the NEC security matches the handbook's security it will work fine?
I don't really understand what the 2 have to do with eachother, I'm not very computer skilled. Do they "link" together somehow to work at the same time?!?

Re: 2005 NEC cd rom?

dave,
I own the both, the NEC CD is worth the money.Only complaint I have about it, to use you must drop it in the cd tray on 'puter to use..

Handbook, you must activate through NFPA to install,no dropping in tray afterwards..Both are worth the money..

Edit to say, don't think it has anything to do w/ conflict with the two...

Re: 2005 NEC cd rom?

Sorry Dave,

I didn't mean to be opaque.

dillon3c summed it up nicely in his last post.

The NFPA reworked the copyright protection in the viewer they supply with the Handbook CD. The viewer is Folioviews. The version of Folioviews used on the NEC CD is the one that created the inability to use the NEC without the CD in the CDROM drive.

The updated version of Folioviews on the Handbook CD permits two installs of the Handbook, each of which require activation online or over the phone to the NFPA. The upside of this procedure is that the Handbook runs from the hard drive without the CD in the CDROM drive.

I have to suspect that the NEC CD available now will also be the improved version of Folioviews. . .a call to the NFPA will verify, and if they still haven't corrected the problem, will help to maintain the pressure to fix it.

Edit --- typo

Re: 2005 NEC cd rom?

I purchased an early copy of the 2005 CD and had problems being able to install the full thing on my computer rather than having to always take the CD with me everywhere. I just got around to looking into this again and recalled hearing about a lot of similar complaints. I just checked with NFPA and they did seemed to feel that there had not been any updates issued and then I called the help number on the CD and they too seemed to feel that nothing has changed. If this is true and I'm sure many NFPA members have voiced similar complaints, then why is NFPA not listening to it's membership?

Re: 2005 NEC cd rom?

I have the 2005 NEC CD and the hardcover Handbook. I prefer the handbook although it lacks the search engine of the CD. I hate the fact that the CD has to be in the drive for it to work. This makes it very slow. I would have opted for the Handbook so that it could be loaded onto the hard drive if I had known better.

Also you can install a virtual CD drive that allows you to run the 2005 NEC CD without it being in the drive. It stores and accesses it from a virtual drive on your computer. Think that the software costs about $30.
