Ive been hearing rumors not to bother with the 08 code because NY will never adopt. Apparently higher ups feel the 08 is geared toward making manufacturers money not safety. Id like to know what anyone else thinks. I already own the 2008 book but I dont want to put to much effort into it if this situation is true.

IMO it is a good read, I have been waiting for it's adoption here to take a test. Manufacture driven, I don't know, I don't sit on any CMP.

NYS is in a financial bind, they have not decided what to do with the code cycle change.
I would not bet on the adoption of the new State code cycle to be on time, as there has been very little activity towards the effort.

I have heard rumblings of not changing the code cycle this time, if that is so, I would be surprised. Who really knows what may occur.
Without money, not much gets done, and there is no money.

Why do they need money to change the code year?

Why do they need money to change the code year?

New York has adopted the international family of codes. By the word "family", I mean the fire code, plumbing code, property maintenance code, building code, energy code, etc., etc. Each of these "codes" have referenced standards. Many of these codes reference a particular edition of the NEC which is a standard, not a code.
When NY begins the task of "enhancing" this family of codes, it convenes task groups whose primary purpose is intended to be the review of all referenced standards. Paying per-diems alone for subcommittee members is a staggering cost to the state. When the revised standards are enhanced by New York's unique needs, and finally enacted into law, the costs of providing the family of code books to each community is overwhelming.

I hope NY is able to find the money, because lagging too many code cycles behind would really undermine all the efforts thus far to bring NY into a safer and more business-friendly place to live and work.

Could you imagine the response if the State tried to pass that responsibility on to the local jurisdictions???:-?

Under the present conditions, I do not see this code cycle happening...

Please let me know if you hear differently.
The freeze on State hiring has really hurt as well, the instructors have been asked to do more for the same pay they did the work in 2 years ago..with no raises in sight. It really is a terrible situation.

NOTE:
For those outside of the NYS loop, the State provides the local jurisdictions with the necessary code books (approximately $500 per person, and a disc, approximately a little less than the books) for each code official in the jurisdiction. There are 3 jurisdictions in my area that have about 15-20 personnel alone. Multiply that by the many, many jurisdictions and their personnel, plus the State personnel and others, and it is a large dollar figure.

One example of the "lagging behind" that NYS is, and may become much further behind in is, Photo Volatiacs. We are already 2 code cycles (residential) behind the current Standards out there today. We could easily fall 3 or maybe even 4 code cycles behind.

I wonder how that will work for installers and inspectors.

and, that is just one example, pools, motors, HVAC, Industrial Control Panels, the list goes on..........................
