Several electricians and one engineer have been unable to give me a satisfactory answer on interpretation of table 408.56, which deals with separation of bare metal parts in switchgear. What I have difficulty understanding is what is defined (for the purpose of a switchboard) as "mounted on the same surface" and "mounted in free air". Could someone give some examples of these two scenarios occuring in (less than 600V) switchboards and panelboards?
