Not really a whole lot of difference in electrical from the NEC.

Off the top of my head the IRC will cover required smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors, although not in electrical, and the NEC does not.

I would recommend a NEC course and not limit your education to residential.

The owner of this site, Mike Holt, has plenty of really good materiel and lots of free stuff also.

If possible, get an Ohio version of the 2012 code. I know VA is on the 2012 IRC but there are differences/amendments, like AFCI for bedroom outlets only, small ga NM is permitted to be stapled to the bottoms of joists in crawlspaces, little things like that.
