2014 nec code

Looking at a print for a 3 story apt complex.
It shows smoke detectors in laundry closet and furnace closet.
Is this new in this code , or is architech stupid?

I assume a residence.... As mentioned it depends on the building code but my guess is that the architect thought it was a good idea to have these alarms in those areas

Normally in a furnace room or closet you don't use a smoke. Heat detector or rate of rise is what is used.
