(4) Garage Branch Circuits. In addition to the number of
branch circuits required by other parts of this section, at least
one 120-volt, 20-ampere branch circuit shall be installed to
supply receptacle outlets in attached garages and in detached
garages with electric power. This circuit shall have no other
outlets.
Exception: This circuit shall be permitted to supply readily accessible
outdoor receptacle outlets.

Does this mean that the lights in a dwelling garage can't be on the same circuit as the receptacles?
We are moving to the 2017 next month (Oct 1) and I'm trying to get up to speed. We are being overwhelmed as we are currently on the 2008 and skipping the 2011, 2014, and going straight to the 17.

Mi think it is poorly worded but... since it is an outlet, in a garage, it would be acceptable... however, I always wire my garage lights with my outside lights... because I do not want to be working in the garage on a project, have my tools blow my breaker, and have no lights to see with, thus tripping over a bike or lawnmower or such...

But isn’t the language the same as what is used for bathrooms, where it was agreed that the bathroom lights are outlets? Again, I would never put it on the same circuit there, but...

That would be overwhelming.

You've missed out on a decade of gnashing teeth and wringing hands denial pursuant to eventual acceptance

What happened? Did your state officials simultaneously fall into a coma? ~RJ~

No the language is different and the garage requirement specifies receptacle outlets not lighting outlets. From Article 100:

Receptacle Outlet. An outlet where one or more receptacles are installed.

Lighting Outlet. An outlet intended for the direct connection of a lampholder or luminaire.

so guess that someone thinks like me in a way... by stating it specifically for receptacles only, they made sure nobody can overload the breaker doing a project and not have the lights to find their way out of the garage... You would need to run a second circuit into the garage, which may supply work tools as well, but...
