Hello All,

We are designing in an area where a Drinking Fountain will be on the other side of a small wall from where some countertop receptacles (not a kitchen) will be located (within 6').

My question is, is a drinking fountain considered a "Sink" requiring GFCI within 6'? The NEC does not define sink. See image for reference.

Thanks!

2020 NEC. GFCI for personnel. 422.5(A)(2) Drinking water coolers and bottle fill stations.

Edit: IMO, it does not qualify as a sink.

The drinking fountain is protected per your reference.

My question is about the receptacle within 6' of the fountain. I am interested to see other opinions, I saw your edit.

Thanks again.

I agree wit RC/retired the drinking fountain may need gfci for personal but it does not require gfci within 6' of it.

Tell that to the safety people on a military base! You will be installing GFCIs within 6 feet. They do allow those plug/attach with screws 6 port GFCI adapters to satisfy the requirement instead of replacing the receptacle. But, it is not in the NEC that I see.

I'll bite on this as it is a design for a military base. Please advise where this requirement exists outside of a specific SOW or RFP requirement. UFC 3-520-01 only specifies to install GFI and AFCI IAW NEC.

I never saw a written document, just the safety person looking at the water cooler and saying the receptacle next to it needed to be GFCI protected. They said nothing about the receptacle installed "inside" the wall hanging water cooler. Afterwards I looked in other buildings on base and saw GFCIs within 6 feet of water coolers.

If LB in your drawing is toward the Subpanel, just have the rest of the circuit on the load side of the shown GFCI. Or, if conduit just run a hot and neutral from the shown GFCI to the next receptacle, if the circuit goes a lot further than the water cooler area.
