Guys, I know in the past all garage plugs had to be on a dedicated circuit that could only service the garage. Then they required a 20a dedicated for the garage bay plugs that can now also power the outdoor plugs around the house. My question is do the other general use garage receptacles have to be on a dedicated garage circuit? Or can they jump off of the general house circuits (understanding they will require GFI protection for the garage) as a jumper circuit for the general use plugs, water softener, GDO, etc.....?

Let me know.

Thanks
Joe

Once you meet the requirements, the other outlets can be on a different circuit.
That said, I don't have access to the 2023 NEC and I'm shooting from the hip.

According to the 2020 NEC, all 125v receptacles in the garage need to be GFCI protected and installed on a 20A circuit. You can install them all on one 20A circuit if you wish because there is no maximum number of receptacles per circuit in dwelling units. You can put your garage receptacles on multiple circuits if they are GFCI protected and 20A, but you can't leave the garage and add other receptacles except for readily accessible outdoor receptacles.

Where does the code say that? The only thing that the 2020 code says is that the receptacles required by 210.52(G)(1) must be on a 20 amp circuit. There is nothing that prohibits using additional circuits with ratings other than 20 amps to supply receptacles that are not required by 210.52(G)(1).

I agree with don. Once you have met the 210.52(G) requirement you can add at your pleasure. Similar to the laundry requirement.

I stand corrected. Must be a local thing here.

That was the common intrepretation under the 2017 code and is why the language in 210.11(C)(4) was changed in the 2020 code.
210.11(C)(4) [2017] (4) Garage Branch Circuits.
In addition to the number of branch circuits required by other parts of this section, at least one 120-volt, 20-ampere branch circuit shall be installed to supply receptacle outlets in attached garages and in detached garages with electric power. This circuit shall have no other outlets.

The same type of change was made for (C)(3) for bathrooms in the 2020 code and for the same reason.

That was how I felt about the laundry requirement, had an inspector that thought all receptacles in the laundry room needed to be on the laundry circuit (I believe 2014 was in effect at that time but don't think anything has really changed since then either). I've always seen it as the "laundry outlets" must be on the "laundry circuit" but other receptacles in same room/area is optional to be on laundry circuit or some other circuit.
