I just wanted to be sure I was looking at the correct current NEC code book. My old 2020 book is thrashed and needs to be replaced. My old book was paper back but I see spiral options which should I go for? Does this eBay picture look correct for NEC code reference, I know there is another book similar but not NEC?

Nope NFPA is the only publisher. Some report copies from Amazon are missing parts
Really but the book is listed under NFPA / NEC

I saw a review that the 2023 NEC “HANDBOOK” offers more information such as explanatory pictures but isn’t allowed to be used in NEC testing?

The handbook has explanations but they are not official. I go with paper and books from Mike holt. In WA any copyright book is allowed for testing. Best just to have highlighted NEC and a firms finder or uglys

Seemingly you like to know "why" and not just :"what" in which case the Handbook would be more useful.
The only downside to the Handbook is it is not allowed to be used on a lot of testing.
If you purchase them thru Mike you can be assured they are not copies.
I would suggest you see what cycle your area is using and what cycle the testing is on and buy that version.

Take a look here:

O wow thanks how do you know the fake copies. What do I look for?
Price. Just purchase from a reputable seller ie mike holt, Barnes and noble etc
CED used to buy thousands of code books and have their name printed on the front. For the bulk purchase they got discount which was passed along

You can purchase just the code, or the handbook, directly from NFPA. I was looking for the 2020 handbook today, and found buying it from NFPA was cheaper than Amazon. I paid just under $300 with shipping. Barnes & Noble didn't have it at all. I wouldn't hesitate to buy it from the Mike Holt site if it was part of a package I wanted.

My 2024 code book is trash. The papers are starting to fall out. I called them and I had to send them a picture, then I get a email saying because of the high volume of calls they are getting it will be a while before they can get to me.

Where did you purchase it?

Electrical supply houses usually have it. I looked at one recently and asked about price. I don't remember exactly what they said but I think it was between $220 and $250.

Legit NEC products have a hologram on the front cover. Don't know if that is also something the counterfeiters can also do. I've always purchased mine from vendors where counterfeits are unlikely.
I just received the 2020 handbook direct from NFPA. It does not have a hologram on the cover. I have no information if the code book (shorter than the handbook) has it. I also don't know if it is present on the 2023 editions.

I think the hologram started with the 2023 edition.

Watch out for counterfeit Code books! If it's really cheap....it may be counterfeit!
Buy it from a reliable source such as your supply house or from NFPA or IAEI in Richardson ,Tx.
