From what I've been told the cheap versions are garbage knock offs.

Someone I know got one of those a few years ago for the 2020 code cycle. There were a couple spelling errors/typos, but no code errors we found when we cross checked them against a book straight from NFPA.

I bought the 2023 NEC directly from the NFPA and the quality was on par with previous versions that I had purchased. I've seen some bootleg PDF versions online but I won't risk downloading malware along with the file.

I bought my 2020 code book off amazon. I needed it for my general supervising electrician test. The copy I bought was garbage because of all the typos, and mis-numbered article sections. Plus, the paper quality was so bad, the highlighting seeped through more than normal.

Now code books are $160 and handbooks are almost $300?

That's crazy.

A work around to have a good quality view of the NEC is to look at the "submit a public input" for the 2029 code. There is no search, but much easier to view than the free viewing page.

I bought a spiral bound handbook in 2008. Never again. A paperback code only is all I ever get since then.
