I was looking over the panel schedules for a new assited living complex out for bids that had a 3000a 120/208v 3ph 4w MDP. In this MDP there were 51 2p 150amp breakers shown to feed 51 tennant panels. The panels were indicated to be 30 cir 120/208v single phase mlo loadcenters. Is there any code restrictions that do not allow 120/208v single phase feeders to a panel like this? I have never installed 208v single phase to any single phase panel. I was under the impression that 120/240v single phase was the only voltage allowed to a single phase panel for this purpose but I cannot find anything to dispute it in the code book so far.
Thanks.

Re: 208v single phase panel

208/120V single phase is fine to the tenant panels.
Of course the MDP will have to be 3 sections to accomodate the 51 2p breakers (42 max per panelboard).

Ron this is not a lighting and branch circuit panelboard, It is allowed to have over the 42 space limit.
See408.14 and 408.15

Plus, 51 2-pole breakers take up 102 spaces, not 51. A 42-space panel would max out at 20 2-poles, with a space at the bottom for a pair of 1-poles.

I agree that this is a switchboard or by definition, a power panelboard and may have 51 or any number of 2 pole CB's.

Re: 208v single phase panel

larry, i have seen main distribution panels that would hold over 100 two pole breakers.

I didn't intend to imply that 100+ was not possible.

Re: 208v single phase panel

Each apartment is allowed to be supplied by a feeder composed of 2 phases conductors and a neutral conductor at 208/120 volts. The panel would have to be a single phase panel rated for the supply voltage.
