Was that much of a problem in early 1970's with what they had for medical equipment then? I could see it being bigger issue maybe about mid 1980's with the more advances in computer chips and such by then.

The history of Isolated Power Systems go back to the days of Either (flammable anesthesia). After flammable anesthesia was left behind it became apparent there was other advantages of using Isolated Power Systems when operating.

A transformer provides significant buffering impedance that can reduce harmonics on the source side. Similar to a line reactor. In my experience, X-ray machines and similar equipment often specify a shield isolation transformer be used to reduce common mode noise. Whether it really helped wasn't really relevant if the manufacturer required it.
