Have to feed a 20A 220V A/C unit - and I know you can re-identify the white in certain situations. The situation I know you can, is when you have a feed and return situation on a switch - but what about for the A/C unit?

Thanks,

Bertt

romex 10-2=white black

im curios too

Yes, in a cable type wiring method you may reidentify the white conductor.

There is NM cable available at a substantial upcharge with a black and red conductor with a ground, without white.

so do you have to identify the whie as a hot?

if so what section is that in?

Interesting. Who makes it?

Don't know, but it seems to always have a red jacket, no matter what gauge it is.

C'mon, you're joking, right? You had me going there. I even went to the Southwire website to check. They don't make it.

I don't know who makes it, but the big box stores sell it...I laugh when people buy it.

Never seen it at the big orange. I was there today spending large sums of money on NM 12-2 & 14-2. They lowered the price $8 bucks a 250 roll it seemed like a good idea to overload a cart with all they had left. And I only ran in to get a 2 gang blank plate. Anything to save a buck!

All the HO's and jacklegs bought it!

I have to buy a door sweep, so tom'row I'll be in Big Box - I'll try and remember to snap a pic or two.

I've never seen it, but if anyone asks, tell them it's for use on DC circuits.

That would be interesting to see. Is it an issue with the NJ inspectors "east coast" thing ? Do they want to see Blk,Red NM over Blk,Wht being taped red?

What I haven't seen either is Blk,red,Blue with ground NM #12 or #14. I Could use some of that for those Fan,light, night light, units every one is putting in now. As it is we use two 2-wire NMs and reidentify one of the whites to blk.

The do make 12/4 NM cable. It has blk, red, blu, white and a bare conductor. And a re-identified white conductor does not have to become red. It can be re-identified black, red, blue, orange etc. And there is no NJ requirement for black and red cable.

Isn't that a violation?

Thanks steve.

I had posted a thread about a fan (Fan, light, night light)....couldn't find it - but knew the end result.

No, I'm not Peter. I've seen it with my own two eyes. Most recently was when I was touring a condo job that I didn't win the bid on.

Here's a picture of the stuff from a Canadian website, but they make it here in the US too ;)

Wow....OK.....I stand corrected. Although I have to say that is just plain weird. I can't see any reason to use it, but the red jacket is easy to identify. Still, I can't see paying the extra money for it.

Does Nexans make the stuff that you saw?
