210.12 (A) AFCI protection

All circuits supplying outlets or devices in the kitchen shall be AFCI protected.
I know what this says, but, does this mean, that the { }stove hood, { } built in microwave shall be AFCI protected? Just mainly want clarification from others on this, so I may inform contractor the opinion of others on this. This in an area that does not get inspections, so therefore there is not an AHJ to ask their opion on this.

IMO, this says it all. To answer your question- yes everything min the kitchen that is fed with 120-V 15 or 20 amp circuit

210.12(A) Dwelling Units. All 120-volt, single-phase, 15- and
20-ampere branch circuits supplying outlets or devices installed
in dwelling unit kitchens, family rooms, dining
rooms, living rooms, parlors, libraries, dens, bedrooms,
sunrooms, recreation rooms, closets, hallways, laundry areas,
or similar rooms or areas shall be protected by any of
the means described in 210.12(A)(1) through (6):

Because your first reference to the AFCI requirements only exists in the 2014 NEC, it follows that this question is to be answered from the same edition of the Code.

Your GFI question is not easily answered as written. First, as Dennis says, ALL kitchen countertop receptacle outlets must have GFCI protection. . . BUT, it doesn't stop there. New in the 2014, is the "six foot" requirement from sink edge, expanded to ANY dwelling unit sink, and it is written such that the receptacle behind an appliance or the receptacle on the other side of a peninsula gets GFI if within the six foot (210.8(A)(7)).

Also new in the 2014, the dishwasher in a dwelling gets GFCI whether it is cord and plug connected or hardwired, regardless of location. (210.8(D))
