What other areas of a house would the wording in 210.12 "similar rooms or areas" include?

If the intention of the code is to protect the branch circuit wiring, shouldn't every branch circuit be included?

I beleive this phrase was included for those of us that have different terms for rooms than the ones listed.
Wikepedia, for instance says, a Dining Room use to be called a Great Hall.
A Breakfast Knook is sometimes refered to as dinette or lounge
I guess the point is that there can be many terms for the same room
Sometimes people from different countries will have a different term for a room than we are used to.

As far as AFCI protection of branch circuits outside of the "list", I'm sure it's comming.
At this point I believe there can be problems with AFCI protection on a circuit that also has GFCI protection, I'll have to verify this though.
