Is this allowed by code? Not would you do it, however is it allowed?

Assume 200AMP service.
Assume disconnect properly installed outside.
3 wire 4/0, 4/0, 4/0 ran to “sub” (main) panel.
Bare copper ran for equipment grounding for this panel to disconnect.

Before you respond read the following.
Note the “”.

215.6 Feeder Conductor Grounding Means. *****, the feeder shall include “or” provide a grounding means,******

Note: using the 250.134 reference.

250.134****, shall be grounded by one of the following methods.

250.134(A) Equipment Grounding Conductor Types. By “any” of the equipment grounding conductors permitted by 250.118.

250.118 Types of Equipment Grounding Conductors. The equipment grounding conductors “with” “ or” enclosing the circuit conductors shall be “one” or more or a combination of the following.

250.118(1) A copper, aluminum, or copper-clad aluminum conductor. This conductor shall be “solid” or stranded; insulated, coved, or “bare”; and in the form of a “wire” or a busbar of any shape.

Does "with" mean outside of the cable, or does it mean "in" the cable?

Other code references usually state "contained witin the same raceway or cable".

Re: 215.6

Using 300.3(B)(2)

Equipment bonding conductors shall be permitted to be installed on th outside of raceways in accordance with 250.102(E).

250.102(E) Shall not exceed 6'

Good call Don.

I was trying to find an out for someone who had pulled a 3 wire to a "sub", without having him repull it back to the main.

I am talking about an older installation not properly installed in its day.

Doing an inspection I find this panel and state that is not safe.

Is my only recommendation that it needs to be replaced, the cable, or would pulling a egc back to the main be the another option?

Any other suggestions?

Mike P.
