If you can hold part of it in one hand, and the rest in the other hand, without the parts touching each other, and if you did this without breaking anything, then you have two yokes. For example, suppose you see two duplex receptacles (i.e., 4 places to plug stuff in) side by side on a wall, with a common cover plate. Turn it off, disconnect the wires, remove the screws that hold the receptacles in the box, and take out the receptacles. You can put one duplex receptacle in one hand and the other duplex receptacle in the other hand, and you didn?t break anything. You have two yokes, and you count them as 360 VA.

I define the yoke as the mounting strap which holds the recepticle. Whether it be a duplex or a single the metal part that holds the recepticle to the box is a yoke. Correct?

I would agree with that.

The NEC mentions "Yoke or Strap" in several places. This would imply that they are different. How does a strap differ from a yoke? If they are the same, why mention both in the same NEC citation? Wouldn't that be redundant?

The meaning is the same, remember that the different parts of the code are written by different people over a period of time. That is why sometimes it seems as though there may be different language used. The style manual for NEC usuage tries to set up a format to be followed, and it mostly works, but some things slip through.

I mean in a single citation it will say "yoke or strap".
