Hi all,
Regarding 2008 NEC, section 220.83, this is the optional calculation for adding loads to an existing dwelling unit. this existing 'dwelling unit'... is the code referring to a single family house, or can it also apply to an individual apartment in an apt. building?

EDIT: I'm asking the question, because i've seen several examples, and they all use a house, rather than an apartment.

Dwelling unit can refer to the interior of a single apartment. It doesn't apply to common areas or the aggregation of multiple dwelling unit.
I see nothing specific about 220.83 that would preclude that definition, either. In fact, 220.84 then talks about "mutifamily dwellings" which are comprised of multiple dwelling units.
