Can anyone explain the exact purpose/meaning of 230.40 Exception No.4? Does exception no.4 indicate you can have one set of service entrance conductors for each service rated dwelling unit panel and one set of service entrance conductors for house panel even each unit panel and house panel are not group at one location?

230.40 says in general each service lateral/drop shall only supply one set of service entrance conductors.
Exception (4) gives you the option to have one service lateral supply all the services for a two-family dwelling, multifamily dwelling,
or multiple occupancy building.
Its does not deal with grouping in that section.

Thanks for the response. When you say all the services, do you refer to multiple(more than one) services as defined in 230.2? Do multiple sets of service entrance conductors equals to multiple service ? Like my question asked, does exception 4 permit you to have multiple service entrance conductor and each goes to different service equipment (such as service rated unit panels, meter banks, house panel ) regardless if they are grouped at one location or not?

Up to six service disconnecting means grouped in one location and served from same supply is "one service"

"other services" when permitted need to be different characteristics for the most part. Those can also have up to six disconnecting means per allowed service.

One drop or lateral supplying up to six individual subsets of conductors to service disconnecting means properly grouped is still "one set" of service entrance conductors. If you have parallel conductors involved you could have much more than six individual raceways to said "service"
