System, 277/480VAC from the utility

If we have a single 1000AMP service coming from the utility to a single CT Cabinet mounted on the outside wall of a building.

Leave the CT cabinet and go to two 600AMP service rated main fused disconnects located on the inside wall opposite the CT cabinet. Further distribution within the building is accomplished with panelboards fed by the two 600Amp fused disconnects.

Is Ground Fault Protection required?

The way I am reading this section, GFP is not required since the two fused disconnects are less than 1000Amps.

Looking for a second/third/forth opinion.

You are correct, GFP is not required unless the disconnect(s) are rated 1000 amps or larger.

Another option,
If we bring the service into a 1200amp panelboard and apply 230-71 (6 breakers), as long as all of the breakers are less than 1000amps, GFP is still not required.
A Second opinion would be appreciated.

Per the handbook:
"An alternative to installing ground fault protection may be to provide multiple disconnects rated less than 1000 amperes. For instance, up to six 800-ampere disconnecting means may be used, and, in that case, ground fault protection would not be required."

There are a number of sources for the NFPA 'Handbook'.

BTW - there are 'other handbooks'[e.g. McGraw-Hill makes a handbook - you can buy the McGraw-Hill handbook on CD through eBay for around $10...no, this is not the NFPA version of the handbook, but it does contain the full text of the NEC with the McGraw-Hill version of interpretation & commentary]

NFPA 'Handbook' sources:

NFPA (nfpa.org)
IAEI [iaei.org](Int'l. Assoc. of Elect. Inspectors)
Mike Holt - I think he sells the Handbook
...and...eBay - there are several dealers selling the '99 and the '02 NFPA version of the 'handbook' and you can get it at quite a discount.

The great feature of the CD versions of the NEC or Handbook is the 'search' capability.

dana,

Are you sure? Past editions of the McGraw-Hill did not contain the NEC text, on the commentary. I don't have a current copy of the handbook to check, but I think that it is a copyright issue.

Amazon.com:
Just got a replacement copy for my 1968 NEC from used books through Amazon. The 68 book is in very good condition, better condition than my well-worn edition that someone borrowed and did not return.
