240V 2 wire spa

I had a man call me saying his spa unit is tripping off. It has a 240 V 60 amp gfci breaker and a 6/3 running to a standard disconnect by the hot tub with a bonded ground and isolated neutral. The spa itself is only a 240V two wire system. So no neutral. Everything seemed to be working correctly before hand and the hardware other than perhaps something in the spa itself should be fine. So other than equipment failure could there be something in the wiring/disconnect/breaker I am missing that is causing the problem? Thanks

“Beforehand?” What’s changed?

90% of the time, when a spa that’s been working starts tripping the GFCI, it’s a problem internal to the heater.
I agree. Disconnect the heater after the gfi tripped while you are there. Then reset and turn it back on. And see what happens.

It does sound like an internal problem with the unit since it was working. Can the breaker be reset at all or does it instantly trip?

I have not been able to make it out to physically inspect it yet but the owner says nothing has changed and it worked fine before hand for several months. He said the breaker trips almost immediately upon resetting. I have never messed with gfci protecting a 2 wire(2 hots and ground) system so I wanted to be sure having the 3 wire to the disconnect and 2 wire to the unit wasn’t the issue.

If it was, it never would have worked.

It's also possible the GFCI breaker has gone bad.

Do you want to try troubleshooting the spa?

He has a spa company for that. I’m just making sure the electrical side is in the clear before I tell him to call them. Thanks.
