250.140 question

So 250.140 allows ranges to use the neutral of a S.E. cable as a grounding means on existing circuits only. We've been told that if the range is relocated and you can still use the existing S.E. cable it's ok. But if you have to extend the cable to the new range location then a cable with an insulated equipment ground wire has to be installed.

What if the other end of the cable needs to be extended ? Case in point, I have a job where the existing Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) panels are being replaced. Insurance company requirement. The FPE panels are located in clothes closets. Do you think I can get the AHJ to just allow me an extension to the new panel location without replacing the entire range cable ?

Strict compliance with wording means if you moved the panel or the receptacle you have extended the circuit.

If your inspector allows some variance on that then you can get by otherwise it looks like run all new circuit time. Some may allow limited extension length but nothing says they have to. This is what the rule now is for needing to add AFCI to existing circuits that otherwise require that protection, but that section has nothing to do with this one so it is still a judgement call on the AHJ if they are going to allow it.

No Dennis your answer at the other site IS helpful. I just didn't realize both sites are so linked together. Thank you for the reply.

That's okay I didn't take it personally. It is always good to get other viewpoints especially when I was the only response over there. If it is a new stove then normally they want a new install but as kwired and I said it really will be an authority having jurisdiction call. The NEC is a bit unclear-- If the panel end was extended because of a new panel I would not feel compelled to rewire the range although I would try an up sell. I believe around here no inspector will red tag it

They are both electrical discussion boards and many people participate in both, otherwise I don't believe there is much more then that linking them together.
